Swiss Chard Seeds - Japanese Umaina. Heirloom, Non-GMO. Beta vulgaris var cicla. Alt names: fudanso, Swiss Chard, tian cai, tojishiya. 55 days. Cool season annual. This tender Japanese variety has broad leaves that are deep green, slightly savoyed, and have short pale green midribs. It can withstand both hot and cold temperatures and is very slow to bolt. Good for fresh market and home garden growing. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in spring after last frost in a warm, sunny location or partial shade in hot areas. In temperate areas, sow in late summer/early fall as well. Keep soil moist. Soak seeds and rinse water 3-4 times before planting. Like beets, chard "seeds" produce more than one plant, so will require thinning. When the plant has a strong root structure, harvest a couple of leaves from each plant. Mature plants can be cut back to 1-2" above soil for re-growth for a cut-and-come again harvest. Harvest whole plant or single leaves when 5-6" tall. Plants will continue to produce new growth at the center. Good in recipes that use pak choi or spinach. Approximately 1900 seeds/ounce.
