'Purpurea Plena Elegans' is a vigorous, deciduous climber. Distinctive very double, dusky-purple flowers to 5cm in width, paler in centre. Flowers mid summer to early autumn. Viticella Group are deciduous climbing shrubs with usually pinnate leaves, and nodding, single to double, open-bell-shaped flowers of small to medium-size, produced on the current year's growth in summer and early autumn. Clematis ‘Purpurea Plena Elegans’ boasts 3-4 inch double flowers in shades of mauve pink to red. Blooming from July through October, ‘Purpurea Plena Elegans’ is a very free flowering variety that blooms profusely throughout the season, making quite an impact. Commonly referred to as P.P.E., this is one of the oldest cultivars there are! There's a lot to love in its performance—it's big, grows quickly, and is incredibly floriferous all summer long. Great for those just starting out with clematis, as it's durable and trains easily. The blooms are so fully double, with all sorts of recurved and twisted sepals, they look like rosettes. Small-flowered clematis do not need to be pruned regularly. Only when they grow too large for their space should they be cut back. Though their growth habit makes them difficult to prune, it can be done in late winter or early spring.
